Creating the Techicolor 2-Strip System 2 Subtractive Look with Affinity Photo

Here’s a detailed look at how the Techicolor ‘System 2’ two-strip method works, including how the combination of cyan and magenta filmstrips enabled a lot of colour to be shown in the 1920s, before the full three-strip system was invented.

From understanding how they did this, we can then create an authentic version using Affinity Photo.

Aside: System 2 actually glued two films together, which caused real problems, so it was replaced by System 3, where a single filmstrip was created by a process called ‘imbitition’. Both use the same visual principles, so there is no extra System 3 video.
